There’s no such thing as a ‘fat burning zone’…it’s just a myth, and LISS
cardio is less effective than HIIT. Here’s an example, an estimating fuel
contribution during exercise, you take the respiratory quotient (RQ)
(measured during rest or steady-state with a metabolic analyzer) which
shows CO2 expired vs O2 consumed.
A test was done in my lab where an athlete walked at 3mph for 20min. The RQ
resulted in 0.8 (coming from 67% of energy from fat and only 33% of energy
coming from carbs) the results were 4.8kcal/min burned @ this intensity –
roughly 3.2kcal from fat, and 1.6kcal from cho.
The second test was conducted with the same athlete 72 hours later under
the same diet using a slightly higher intensity of 6mph for 20min. The RQ
resulted in .86 (coming from 46% of energy from fat and 54% of energy from
cho) the results were 9.75kcal/min burned @ this intensity – roughly
4.48kcal from fat and 5.2kcal from cho. In terms of calories expended just
from fat as the primary fuel source it would be 64kcal vs. 90kcals. As you
can see the lower intensity exercise for the same duration resulted in a
24kcal difference.
The best thing to do is to add HIIT 2-3x per week preferably after
resistance training for optimal fat loss while maintaining muscle mass.
